Arsenal has appointed interim boss Renee Slegers as the new permanent head coach and ended the three-month search.
Former manager Jonas Eidevall resigned in October and has since taken over the wave of San Diego in the NWSL. Since departure, Slegers acts as a meantime and her ascent in the form of the Dutch woman, the Gunners are in third place in the WSL table, seven points behind managers Chelsea.
So far, Arsenal has won 10 of her eleven games among Slegers and only pulled to Manchester United once during this time. The impressive turnaround also meant that they qualified the top of their Champions League group in front of the Bayern Munich after they had passed the German Giants before Christmas.
Here, 90 minutes I took a look at five things that you need to know about Arsenal’s head coach while the club enters a new era …
The manager of the manager with Arsenal did not begin in September 2023 when she entered Eidevall as an assistant. In fact, between 2006 and 2007 she was in the club’s books.
She lived and studied at Oakland’s College in Hertfordshire, the main provider of the club. Slegers worked with Alex Scott and Kelly Smith during her first spell in London and always loved to talk about her time in the academy.
This is also not the first time that Slegers will replace eidevall in management shelter. Before she came to Arsenal, she worked in Sweden with FC Rosengard, initially as a manager of her B team.
In June 2021 she took over after Eidevall’s departure to join Arsenal. In 2021 and 2022, she led the team to successive at that time venskan titles before leaving her post in April 2023.
Arsenal’s head coach was only 29 years old when she called the time for her career as a player. She earned a total of 55 hats for her national team, but her last appearance took place in November 2016 when she was only 27 years old.
In a friendly against England, she suffered a serious injury that led to the European Championships in 2017 that the Netherlands both organized and won. After more than a year on the side, she announced her retirement in February 2018.
Arsenal’s incredible results among Slegers would not have been possible without the players shopping their methods. The squad has spoken extremely high of the 35-year-old since October and the performances have certainly supported this on the field.
Already in October, Beth Mead described the leadership of Slegers as a “breath of fresh air” when she was asked whether the squad would like to take responsibility permanently. Although they were careful not to comment on the recruitment process, the mood and optimism in the team have been noticeable in the past few months.
