Few football players have ever hit a ball like the former Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and John Arne Riise – Gerrard with his thundering right foot, Riise with his cannon from the left.
Both will be remembered for iconic goals: Gerrard’s stop-time missile in the FA Cup final 2006 and Riise’s unstoppable free kick against Manchester United in 2001.
But after years of the debate about who really had the hardest shot, the two Reds legends finally put it to the test – and Riise came to the extreme.
The competition took place the day before Nexon symbols Legends Match in the Seoul World Cup Stadium. The two players sat down in a number of challenges, including one in which Gerrard and Riise balls were equipped with stacked leaves for testing blanket in a specially built propie.
Riise’s strike turned out to be stronger, through the entire obstacle and drawing gases from the South Korean crowd. Gerrard’s efforts, although they are still powerful, only made it on the division.
The moment triggered a big cheer – and laughing – from players and fans. Riise later shared the film material on Instagram with the caption: “Memories made today. The reception we have from the fans in Korea is crazy!” Gerrard replied in a good mood and dropped a simple laughing emoji.
The exhibition game itself had the last laugh again. His team of legendary defenders defeated the team of attackers from Gerrard 2-1 thanks to the late goals from Maicon and Jooho Park.
Riise 2, Gerrard Nil.
