According to The Pitch Prospect, San Jose Earthquakes are close to a deal to sign former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea striker Timo Werner.
Werner has only played 13 minutes for RB Leipzig this season and was informed in the summer that he was not part of their plans.

The German international returned to his home country at the end of last season after a loan spell at Spurs.
But since then he has not been in the starting eleven in any competition and has been substituted on three times for Leipzig.
Of those three, two were also late, one-minute cameos, as the club maintains its stance that he will play little to no role.
This now appears to have led to another exit from the club this winter, having already left in 2020 and 2024.
Werner left Leipzig for £47m six years ago for Chelsea before moving to north London on loan last season.
And now his third departure across the pond is likely to take place.
MLS club San Jose Earthquakes have been in the market for a striker and would like to give the out-of-favor star a chance.
The 29-year-old would fill a specific position – a position for three players who are outside a club’s salary cap – for the Quakes, who still have a spot available for the remainder of the window.
San Jose finished tenth in the MLS Western Conference last season, narrowly missing out on a place in the play-offs.
They hope that signing a European star like Werner will boost their hopes of improvement next season.

Why did Werner leave Spurs?
Werner originally joined Spurs on loan in January 2024 before being re-signed on another short-term contract in the summer.
However, this spell was less successful and Ange Postecoglou publicly expressed his disappointment with the German.
Postecoglou described his performance against Rangers in the Europa League as “unacceptable” after substituting him at half-time.
And his Spurs career never got back on track after that, as injuries also complicated his second spell at the club.
That meant he returned to Leipzig just days after winning the Europa League – having scored just three goals in 41 games.
Things haven’t gotten much better for Werner since his return to Germany and his career is at a standstill.

Werner’s recent fights
Werner has scored over 150 goals during his time in the Premier League and Bundesliga and has also won 57 caps for Germany.
During his time with the club, he scored 113 goals in just 216 competitions for Leipzig.
But after a quick start at Stamford Bridge six years ago, he scored just 23 goals for Chelsea in two years.
And now Werner is in a long goal drought and hasn’t scored at all since October 2024.
His last goal contribution of any kind was an assist for Tottenham in a 1-1 draw against Fulham in December 2024.
He desperately needs a fresh start and San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS could be the destination for him.
