Tottenham make first signing of the summer as they extend Timo Werner’s loan deal from RB Leipzig

Timo Werner will stay at Tottenham next season after the club announced an extension of his loan deal from RB Leipzig.

The German joined Spurs from the Bundesliga team in January, initially on loan for the second half of the season.

The former Chelsea striker was brought in as a replacement for Heung-min Son and contributed two goals and three assists in 13 Premier League games.

Ange Postecoglou’s side had the option to sign Werner permanently for around £15 million, but this option was not taken up.

However, a statement from Spurs confirmed that he will spend the 2024/25 season with the north London giants.

And just like their previous contract, they have another option to make a permanent move next summer.

According to BBC Sport, this is possible for £8.5 million.

In the video announced by Spurs, Werner said: “I’m happy to be here in north London. I see how good the club is, how good we are as a team.”

“I can already feel in the stadium that they are behind me and are really happy when I score a goal. Spurs are a really, really good place.”

Werner made an immediate impression on his debut for Spurs in a 2-2 draw with Manchester United, providing an assist for Rodrigo Bentancur.

He scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win against Crystal Palace before scoring his second in a 4-0 win against Aston Villa.

Werner’s season ended abruptly with the 2-3 defeat in the North London derby against Arsenal, as he had to leave the field in the first half with a thigh injury.

However, he will get another chance to show Spurs fans his quality when he returns for next season.

The 28-year-old is likely to be followed by more new signings this summer as Postecoglou looks to build on his impressive first year at the club.
