Manchester United release seven players but Jonny Evans’ future remains in limbo

Jonny Evans remains in talks over a new contract with Manchester United. The club have announced that seven players will leave the club as free agents.

The 36-year-old surprisingly returned to Old Trafford in 2023 on a one-year contract – and played 30 times in all competitions.

He even attended the FA Cup final against Manchester City and Erik ten Hag was a great admirer of his professionalism.

And in a statement released by United on Wednesday morning, they confirmed that talks were ongoing to keep him at the club.

The same goes for third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who has only played in three games since joining in 2021.

But many of United’s first-team stars will leave the club on free transfers, including French duo Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane.

Martial joined United from Monaco for £36 million in 2015 and scored on his debut against Liverpool.

But he has struggled with injuries and a drop in form over the past four years, leaving the 28-year-old with only two goals to score in the 2023/24 season.

The striker, who has already written an emotional farewell message to his fans, ends his career at United with 90 goals in 317 games.

His Les Bleus international colleague Varane has spent the last three years at the Theatre of Dreams after joining from Real Madrid for £42 million.

The last of Varane's 95 appearances for United came in the FA Cup final at Wembley last month.

Varane was plagued by injuries last season but was a standout in the FA Cup final – arguably one of his best performances for United.

Left-back Brandon Williams will also leave the club when his contract expires on June 30, after slipping down the pecking order in recent seasons.

John Obi Mikel reveals that Sir Alex Ferguson has finally forgiven him after 18 years after his move to Manchester United fell through and he signed for Chelsea instead.

Academy striker Charlie McNeill, who cost United £750,000 when he was poached from City in 2020, is also on the verge of leaving after making just one first-team appearance.

Academy players Marcus Lawrence and Kie Plumley were also not offered a contract extension.

Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone will step down from his role as player-coach of the U21 national team.

In addition to Evans and Heaton, academy graduate Shola Shoretire is also in talks about extending his stay.

And teenage midfielder Omari Forson has been offered a new contract after a breakthrough season in which he made seven first-team appearances.
