Tottenham need Harry Kane replacement and Ledley King lists three strikers he loves

Tottenham need to sign a new striker if they are to build on the progress they have made under Ange Postecoglou.

That’s what club legend Ledley King would like to see. He appeared on The Pitch Prospect and outlined an area the club could focus on and build on from fifth place.

When asked what his old club needed to improve, he told The Pitch Prospect.com: “I still think we need a centre-forward.”

Tottenham sold record goalscorer Harry Kane, who finished his last season with 30 Premier League goals, to Bayern Munich last summer. Captain Heung-Min Son scored 17 league goals, with Richarlison trailing him with 11.

“It’s hard to figure out who,” King added. “Finding an absolute top striker is a real must.”

However, he revealed which goalscorers he likes to see, but again stressed how difficult it is to convince the competition to part with their strikers.

“I really like [Alexander] Isak in Newcastle, but that probably won’t happen.

“I like [Dominic] Solanke at Bournemouth, Evan Ferguson at Brighton. Solanke has had a good season. I would like us to get a real striker.”

Isak's good form at Newcastle has attracted interest from several clubs and King would like to add his former club to his list of admirers.

All three options would be a welcome addition to Postecoglou’s side, with Isak and Solanke ranked third and fourth in the league’s top scorers’ list for the 2023/24 season with 21 and 19 goals respectively.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Irish international Ferguson is being touted as a future star of the game after breaking into Brighton’s first team as a teenager and scoring his first senior hat-trick in September 2023.

With Spurs favouring a clear attacking style under Postecoglou, a transfer to the capital could be a tempting offer for any target.

The Lilywhites may have lacked an outstanding goalscorer, but they were not lacking in creativity: Son and Brennan Johnson each contributed ten assists last season, while James Maddison even managed nine.

And King argued that a central point of attack could be the perfect solution to the weaknesses in his former employer’s defense, which had been exposed by their attacking style of play.

The former defender said: “We have conceded a lot of goals, but if we improve in attack, it will take the pressure off the defenders.”

This allowed Maddison to intercept the ball and pass it to Son to score for Spurs.

“If the coach wants to play an attacking style of football, it’s very simple. The full-backs are on the pitch and of course that creates space for the opponent, but you have to develop your own style.

“The more we strengthen our squad so that it goes on the offensive in the spirit of the coach, the fewer goals we will concede.”

The Tottenham boss is reportedly planning a rebuild in the summer to lead his team back to the Champions League. It remains to be seen whether he will make King’s wish come true and bring one of his favourite strikers into the Spurs ranks.
