The newly promoted Saints are among a number of Premier League clubs showing interest in the English U19 European champions.

Edwards, 21, made his senior debut for Peterborough in 2020 and has made 142 appearances in all competitions.

Despite relegation from the Championship in the 2021/22 season, the centre-back was named Player of the Season.

He has now become a regular player in the team, but could also play in the Premier League beyond the summer.

Southampton are preparing to return to top-flight action immediately after beating Leeds in the Championship play-off final.

Russell Martin’s side were fourth in the table before beating West Brom in May and heading for promotion at Wembley.

This led to the permanent signing of centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Manchester City for £20 million after initially joining on loan.

Southampton have also welcomed Adam Lallana back to the club on a one-year contract after a decade at Liverpool and Brighton.

Leicester completed the permanent signing of Abdul Fatawu and Jamie Vardy signed a new contract. Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna agreed a new deal until 2028.

Southampton face a difficult return to the Premier League in August when they travel to Newcastle on the opening weekend.

In their first home game they host Nottingham Forest, their next opponents in the first five matches are Brentford, Manchester United and the also new addition Ipswich Town.
