Newcastle in advanced talks over Anthony Elanga swap deal with Nottingham Forest

Newcastle are in advanced talks with Nottingham Forest over a move for winger Anthony Elanga, The Pitch Prospect has learned.

The deal will likely see Elliot Anderson move in the opposite direction to resolve both clubs’ PSR issues.

Elanga joined Forest from Manchester United last summer and had a good season at the City Ground, scoring five goals and providing nine assists to help the club avoid relegation.

Anderson is a graduate of Newcastle’s youth academy but has struggled to secure a place in Eddie Howe’s starting line-up.

With clubs having to meet profit and sustainability rules ahead of Sunday’s PSR deadline, The Pitch Prospect chief football correspondent Alex Crook says the deal could be beneficial for both sides.

In an interview with The Warm Up, Crook explained: “It’s one of those deals where you help each other out on PSR.”

“It’s a trade – or at least a player going in the opposite direction as far as Elliot Anderson is concerned.

“Villa and Chelsea did it, Everton did it too.

“It’s an interesting move for Elanga. He’s the type of player Eddie Howe would like to coach and get the best out of because he’s got talent but we haven’t been able to tap into his full potential yet.

“If you’re Newcastle and you finished in the top four two seasons ago and qualified for the Champions League and you’re talking about all sorts of big signings, that’s not exactly a sexy signing, is it?”

Anderson seems to be going in the other direction

Earlier this summer, Newcastle were rumoured to be under pressure to sell players in order to comply with the PSR contract, with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak notably among the players linked with departures.

But according to Crook, there are two other English players who are attracting interest.

Anthony Gordon raves about his England teammate Marc Guehi and says he would like to have him at Newcastle

He explained: “It’s almost like a mini deadline and Newcastle have to try even harder than many other clubs to resell players to avoid points deductions.”

“West Ham and Saudi Arabia are interested in Callum Wilson and there is also some interest in Kieran Trippier.

AC Milan seem determined to sign a Premier League right-back this summer – they wanted Matty Cash and now they want Trippier.

“I don’t really see how this Trippier deal will happen between now and tomorrow – especially considering that, if he’s fit, he’ll hopefully be playing in England’s round of 16 match at the European Championships.”
