Bruno Fernandes to become one of Manchester United’s highest paid players with new contract

Bruno Fernandes will be one of Manchester United’s top earners after signing a new contract.

The Portuguese international is expected to extend his current contract, which expires in 2026, until 2027 with the option for a further year.

His new package is expected to put him level with Marcus Rashford as the club’s top earner; the England international reportedly earns £350,000-a-week.

Fernandes’ previous salary was estimated to be around £220,000 a week, meaning United have given him a significant pay rise.

Previously, the team was forced to take a 25 percent salary cut due to missing out on qualification for the Champions League.

Fernandes celebrates his 30th birthday in September and already indicated in the summer that his future was uncertain.

In May he explained: “I feel like the club wants me to be part of the future. As I have always said, I don’t want to be a player the club doesn’t want.”

“I will be here if the club wants me to be there in the future. If for some reason they don’t want me, I will leave.”

Fernandes had also suggested that United had not lived up to its sporting ambitions in recent years.

“I just want my expectations to match the club’s expectations,” he said before the FA Cup final victory against Manchester City.

“If you talk to any fan, they will tell you the same thing. We want to play in the league. We want to play Champions League football. We want to be in the cup final.”

“That’s the standard. That’s what I want. That’s what you all deserve.”

The midfielder had been linked with Bayern Munich and Inter Milan as well as the Saudi Pro League, but his new contract ends speculation about his future this summer.

Fernandes joined the Red Devils from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £68 million.

He was then named captain of the club under Erik ten Hag and scored 54 goals in 159 Premier League games.
