Newcastle reopen talks to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford after £15m offer rejected earlier in summer

As The Pitch Prospect has learned, Newcastle have resumed talks with Burnley over a move for goalkeeper James Trafford.

To meet the PSR requirements, the Magpies would prefer to complete a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

Burnley rejected a £15 million offer at the start of the transfer window.

The 21-year-old played 28 times for the Clarets as they were relegated from the Premier League last season.

Trafford missed the first Championship game of the season but returned for Saturday’s clash with Sunderland.

Scott Parker’s team lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Trafford was also part of England’s squad for Euro 2024 before being left out of Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad.

Burnley boss Parker was asked about the goalkeeper’s future last week and said: “At the moment he’s here. You have to understand that speculation is speculation. James is here and James has the shirt, that’s why he played.”

“To answer your question: Is he number one? At the moment he is.

“But he has someone or two others behind him who will put pressure on him and try to rip the shirt off his body.

“What happens in the future? I don’t know, I can’t answer that. But at the moment, this is someone who I thought was brilliant on Monday night. He showed his quality again.”

Parker still has to make big changes to his team before the end of the transfer window

Parker still has to make big changes to his team before the end of the transfer window.

“He’s another player who had a tough season last year, but he’s an exceptional goalkeeper and showed all his quality on Monday night.”

Several players have already left Burnley this summer: Wilson Odobert and Sander Berge are moving to Tottenham and Fulham respectively.

Dara O’Shea and Arijanet Muric have both signed for Ipswich, while winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson has moved to the Saudi Pro League.

On the subject of transfers, Parker said: “It’s been a tough week. Some of the changes have been due to injuries, others are due to the fact that perhaps certain players will leave who don’t see a future here.”

“I think it’s going to be a busy week – (last) week was extremely busy.

“These are some of the issues you face as a club that has just been relegated from the Premier League. I think it will be another busy week and we have to try and deal with it as best we can.

“I am convinced that players will leave, but we will also get some new players.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle could continue to see departures from Eddie Howe’s squad.

A move for Kieran Trippier has been linked before Friday’s deadline.

Everton are said to be interested in signing the full-back.
