However, that changed this summer after the clubs agreed in principle to change the profit and sustainability rules [PSR].

But many clubs were still struggling by the June deadline, so a series of deals were made between the top clubs to ensure that no team suffered a points deduction.

That phase is now over and all 20 Premier League teams are working hard to strengthen their squads before the transfer window closes.

When does the summer transfer window close?

The transfer window in Europe will be shorter this year and will end at 11pm on Friday 30 August.

The Premier League normally closes on September 1st, but has brought forward the deadline day to keep pace with the other leagues.

However, countries such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey often extend their trading periods.

This can leave teams vulnerable to short-term transfers, although top clubs could use the Saudi Pro League as an opportunity to alleviate some of their financial problems.

Four Saudi clubs are currently funded by the Public Investment Fund, while Al-Ettifaq is coached by Steven Gerrard, so it is likely that another group of top-class players will head to the Middle East this summer.

Last year, Premier League clubs spent over two billion pounds, and even more money will be spent this time too.

But with PSR still tight for many clubs, it would be a surprise if we reached such numbers again.
