Brighton managed to hold Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in front of their own fans on Saturday evening.
17-year-old Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri gave the Gunners an early lead. Just after his first start in the Premier League, the outstanding academy graduate scored his second goal in the top flight, letting a third man burst down the right flank before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
Brighton fought its way back into the competition and took advantage of the visitors’ declining play to win the ball several times in the final third. But the hosts’ profligacy in front of goal prevented them from punishing Arsenal’s lackluster play in the first half.
Mikel Arteta’s side refused to be roused from their self-imposed slumber by Brighton’s obvious threat and slept early in the second half until the Seagulls scored a penalty. Joao Pedro won and converted the penalty in the 61st minute after winning an aerial attack with a wayward William Saliba.
A disappointing draw leaves Arsenal five points behind league leaders Liverpool, who still have two games in hand against the Gunners. Brighton’s fourth single point was enough to move into the top half of the Premier League table.
