Player ratings as Jimenez penalty double rescues point

Rain-soaked Craven Cottage witnessed a thrilling 2-2 draw between Fulham and Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys were pushed back into their own half by an energetic home team in the first few meetings, but always looked capable on the counterattack. That threat manifested itself in the first goal when Calvin Bassey’s terrible free throw – which followed Ben Johnson’s header hitting the crossbar – landed at the feet of Sammie Szmodics – the former Blackburn Rovers star, who fired past Bernd Leno from close range .

Fulham felt Leif Davis should have been shown a red card for a foul on Harry Wilson before half-time – a decision that infuriated Marco Silva on the touchline – and the latter fell victim to a fall from Sam Morsy with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Referee Darren Bond was told by VAR to review his decision not to award a penalty, allowing Raul Jimenez to equalize from 12 yards. Just minutes later Ipswich had a penalty of their own when Timothy Castagne brought down Liam Delap and the in-form striker fired his shot into the corner of Leno’s net.

Substitute Jack Clarke rattled the post as Ipswich pushed to put the game beyond doubt, but agonizingly conceded another penalty when Davis’ back leg brought down Jimenez. The Mexican coolly converted again, sending goalkeeper Christian Walton the wrong way as his shot sailed into the top corner.

Fulham remain in 9th place in the table while Ipswich remain in the bottom three places on goal difference.
