Player ratings as FA Cup holders win thriller on penalties

Altay Bayindir was the hero as Manchester United beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a thrilling FA Cup third round draw at the Emirates Stadium.

A thrilling game in north London ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of hectic action, with United taking the lead early in the second half through Bruno Fernandes before Gabriel Magalhaes equalized.

Diogo Dalot was sent off after receiving two quick yellow cards, subjecting United to unnecessary stress and duress, and his departure was the catalyst for Bayindir putting in a wonderful performance in the closing stages of the game.

Fernandes’ goal was a wonderful first attempt that slotted into the corner of David Raya’s goal – the Portuguese benefited from great work from Alejandro Garnacho.

As soon as Dalot left the fray behind him, Gabriel Magalhaes equalized with a deflected finish before Martin Odegaard missed a penalty for Arsenal – Bayindir came down to the left and parried the Norwegian.

Opportunities were then spurned by Kai Havertz and Declan Rice before the game went into extra time, but despite the home side pushing for a win and looking to extend their numerical advantage, they were unable to break a spirited, stubborn United.

Havertz failed in the shootout and United converted all five shots to secure a famous victory and a place in the fourth round.
