Newcastle United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup by coming from behind to beat Bromley 3-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Magpies were riding high heading into this cup tie and the Toon Army must have thought they would enjoy a quiet afternoon. Newcastle’s outstanding form has seen them move up to fifth in the Premier League table and they recently took a big leap towards the Carabao Cup final with a 2-0 away win against Arsenal.
However, Eddie Howe’s side were quickly brought back down to earth by the League Two side. The manager’s heavily rotated eleven were baffled in the early stages. Cameron Congreve achieved what the Gunners had failed to do in midweek, breaking through Martin Dubravka’s defense with a neat, curling shot from distance.
However, it didn’t take long for the Premier League side to restore parity as Lewis Miley, who has barely featured this season after returning from a long-term injury, scored a thunderous strike to equalize for Newcastle.
The hosts took full control afterwards and should have taken the lead immediately after Miley’s equalizer through William Osula. Newcastle’s dominance for the rest of the first half was no surprise as they had 86% of the ball, but Bromley were persistent enough to go into half-time tied at 1-1.
There were no mistakes from Howe at the start of the second half as Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes came into play. The former coolly converted a penalty from 12 meters to give Newcastle their first lead in the cup game three minutes after the restart.
Osula, making a rare appearance since arriving in the summer, scored the third goal for the hosts – his first for the club – with a fine finish. Newcastle’s confident second-half performance allowed Howe to bring on 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi for his competitive debut and the Magpies maintained their two-goal lead without much fuss in the closing stages.
