Barcelona midfielder Gavi has spoken out about reports of a possible departure for his teammate Ronald Araujo, stressing that the centre-back has no interest in leaving the club.
Amid reports of stalled contract negotiations, it was claimed that Araujo had already agreed to join Juventus on loan before Arsenal joined the race to sign the Uruguay international.
However, the story turned on Wednesday when it emerged that Araujo had agreed the terms of a contract extension with Barcelona, who marked the occasion with a 5-1 triumph over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey.
Gavi, who scored the comfortable win, tried to put an end to the speculation after the final whistle.
“Many journalists make up stories,” Gavi told the media. “Araujo wants to stay and I am confident he will.”
Araujo’s importance to the team became clear after Inigo Martinez limped off injured in the Super Cup win over Real Madrid, opening the door for him to make his first meaningful start of the season against Betis.
“I think he has a contract for another year and a half. I never doubted that,” said coach Hansi Flick after the final whistle. “I don’t know, I’m glad he’s here. I’m glad he’s here and we’ll see what the future brings.”
“He’s doing well at the moment. Even today you can see that the fans value his return. And of course the team too. He gives us something special.”
