Virgil van Dijk has laughed off suggestions Liverpool are in the middle of a “crisis”.
The Reds had a dominant start to life under new coach Arne Slot, but have suffered a significant decline in form in recent weeks. They have won just three of their last seven Premier League games, moving Arsenal to within four points of the top of the league.
Liverpool also lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, but Van Dijk argued that the team’s recent results were simply evidence of the high level of competition in England’s top flight.
“Ooh, so we’re in a crisis now?” Van Dijk said sarcastically when asked about Liverpool’s recent form.
“It just confirms that the Premier League is a very tough league where you play against opponents who are very good. It was always hard, same goes for.” [Manchester] United at home with their new manager and the game plan that they have shown, especially against the bigger teams.
“Every game is tough, we have to find a way to win and I think if we play like we did in the second half and keep fighting, keep trying, keep finding chances then I’m very confident that we can do the same “We’ll score goals well like we did.” I did that all season long.
Van Dijk also saw the positives in Liverpool’s recent trend of conceding the first goal in a game. The Reds have had to come from behind five times in the last seven games.
“It shows resilience,” emphasized Van Dijk. “Nobody wants to come from behind, we have to keep working and get everyone in top shape to prevent that. We can only try to do better in the next game.”
