An Amad Diallo hat-trick in the final eight minutes of Thursday’s game against Southampton gave Manchester United a barely deserved 3-1 win.
The Saints have managed just one goal in their last six Premier League games, but had the chance to score two or maybe three before finally taking a deserved lead in the 43rd minute.
After Andre Onana blocked Kamaldeen Sulemana, Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling, the United goalkeeper was beaten by his own player. Manuel Ugarte unknowingly deflected a corner kick past his teammate in the first half. Having conceded through headers, volleys and straight from the flag, United had now added own goals to their growing repertoire of set-piece incompetence.
“We scored a goal,” was the ironic saying from Southampton’s away game at the end of the first half.
The traveling fans should have had much more to celebrate, but a combination of Onana’s heroics and the well-known weaknesses of her strikers ensured that their lead remained just a dangerous goal heading into the final ten minutes.
Amad, United’s perennial savior this season, took center stage. The in-form winger took advantage of a lucky bounce and scored the equalizer under Aaron Ramsdale. The clock had already run out in the last minute of regular time when Amad picked up the ball again and the player completed a devilish one-two with Christian Eriksen, who volleyed the hosts into the lead.
The 22-year-old crowned his comeback in stoppage time and converted a shot from Taylor Harwood-Bellis to make it 3-1.
