Player ratings as Endrick sends Los Blancos into Copa del Rey quarter-finals

Endrick helped Real Madrid to a 5-2 win over Celta Vigo on Thursday night as Carlo Ancelotti’s side sneaked into the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey after extra time.

After Sunday’s sobering defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana, Madrid went into the midweek cup game wounded. The capital club landed the first blow, taking the lead in the first half thanks to a stunning individual goal from Kylian Mbappe, who continues to improve with every appearance in all white.

Vinicius Junior doubled Madrid’s lead within three minutes of the restart, completing a crisp forward push involving all three members of Madrid’s attacking trio. However, Celta Vigo would not go down without a fight.

Jonathan Bamba equalized for the visitors in the 83rd minute when Pablo Duran intercepted Eduardo Camavinga’s sloppy touch on the edge of his own penalty area and fired in for his substitute colleague. Bamba then won a penalty for Celta in stoppage time, getting toe-to-toe on the ball before Raul Asencio hit the Ivory Coast international.

Former Barcelona full-back Marcos Alonso – whose grandfather Marquitos was a five-time European Cup winner with Madrid – coolly converted to force extra time.

With a penalty shootout on the horizon, Endrick electrified the Bernabeu with a thunderous shot. The much-maligned Brazilian was repeatedly linked with an exit by Ancelotti and offered valuable minutes, but bailed out his under-pressure coach with a late opener on Thursday night.

Fede Valverde, an undisputed Ancelotti favorite, secured Madrid’s place in the quarter-finals before Endrick scored his second of the night with a mischievous shot. Madrid could face Barcelona in the next round but will not face defending champions Athletic Club, who were eliminated on Thursday.
