Ruben Amorim sets fresh challenge to Alejandro Garnacho over Man Utd future

Ruben Amorim has admitted he wants to see improvements from Alejandro Garnacho if the Argentina international wants to force his way back into Manchester United’s starting lineup.

Garnacho was left out of the Manchester derby squad alongside Marcus Rashford last month, but responded well to the problem behind the scenes and has appeared as a substitute in United’s last four Premier League games.

The uncertainty over his future has sparked interest from elsewhere, with Napoli believed to be interested in Garnacho as they look to replace the PSG-bound Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

While Amorim made no secret of his admiration for Garnacho’s abilities, he said the young winger needed to adapt to the demands of the new tactical set-up at Old Trafford.

“He has talent,” Amorim said. “He has to learn to play in a different position. He has to play better inside.”

“He improves significantly in the recovery position when he doesn’t have the ball. But when he does that, he is sometimes no longer in the right position to make transitions as he has been in the past. I prefer to defend and then build with all the team to reach the final third.

“He finds the best way to play in this system. He is improving in training. He was in the starting line-up in the last game. Let’s see, tomorrow. I think he changed the way he saw himself.”

United would reportedly only consider offers of around £70m to part ways with Garnacho, whose contract runs until 2028.
