Player ratings as Gunners’ title hopes handed huge blow

Arsenal let a two-goal lead slip as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

For the first 30 minutes, Arsenal fans were worried that their team’s problems in front of goal would get the better of them again, but those concerns were allayed when Gabriel Martinelli fired home from close range towards the end of the first half. Emiliano Martinez tried to block the shot on the goal line, but a buzz on the referee’s clock confirmed the goal.

Havertz doubled Arsenal’s lead early in the second half with a clever finish from Leandro Trossard’s cross, but Youri Tielemans’ diving header halved the deficit almost immediately and Ollie Watkins’ controlled volley ensured the two sides played a draw heading into the final 20 minutes .

Arsenal thought they had won late on when Mikel Merino’s shot found its way into the net, but a VAR check confirmed it was a handball from Kai Havertz.

After Liverpool secured a late win over Brentford earlier in the day, the Gunners are now six points behind the league leaders having played a game more.
