Everton vs Tottenham: Preview, predictions and lineups

Two Premier League players meet at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon as Tottenham Hotspur travel to Everton.

These historic clubs have been trophy-shy in modern times, and perhaps both clubs see a bit of themselves in the other. The two inherently pessimistic fan bases have endured dismal 2024/25 seasons so far, although many would argue that Everton have exceeded pre-season expectations fulfilled.

Sean Dyche left the Toffees in 16th place in the table and just above the drop zone. David Moyes has since been named as his successor, but the returning Scot suffered a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa in midweek.

Spurs’ Premier League drought continued on Wednesday as Arsenal beat the North London derby 2-1 at the Emirates. The number of visitors on Sunday remains depleted, but Ange Postecoglou simply has to expect an increase in results soon.

They remain in all cup competitions – Postecoglou’s salvation – but the return of Spurs, who took five points from a possible 29 in their last nine league games, can only be described as relegation form.

Here is 90 minutes Guide to Sunday’s Premier League clash.

David Moyes

Everton will soon have Dwight McNeil and James Garner available again, but the pair are expected to miss Sunday’s game with knee and back injuries.

Seamus Coleman is also suffering from a muscle problem and is doubtful for Tottenham’s visit, while strikers Youssef Chermiti and Armando Broja are ruled out. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is likely to remain at the top despite his wasteful performance during the week. Moyes has Beto as an alternative.

Nathan Patterson could replace Ashley Young at right-back and Jesper Lindstrom is also pushing for a start in attack.

Predicted Everton line-up against Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Patterson, Tarkovsky, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Gueye, Mangala; Lindstrom, Doucour, Ndiaye; Calvert Lewin.

Richarlison

Richarlison was substituted in the derby after a few months out with a thigh injury. Son Heung-min scored on Wednesday but has had a poor performance this season and we could soon see the Brazilian becoming a real option on the left for Postecoglou.

Ben Davies could be back in the matchday squad on Sunday but Spurs are likely to have to stick with the same makeshift defense at Goodison Park. Brennan Johnson is suddenly questionable further upfield with a calf injury.

Wilson Odobert, Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur and Timo Werner are all out injured.

Predicted line-up for Tottenham vs Everton (4-3-3): Kinsky; Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence; Bissouma, Bergvall, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, son.

Can both teams lose?

Moyes’ Everton won’t be too different from Dyche’s version and they will continue to be a difficult team to beat, especially at Goodison. The Toffees would have picked up a point on Wednesday if Calvert-Lewin had returned to his self at the start of the 2020/21 season rather than the version that has manifested since.

The Spurs should have control and territory here, but they have hardly proven to be adept lock pickers against compact defenses. Their problems with set pieces have not been as noticeable compared to last season, but the hosts will no doubt be looking to gain the upper hand from such situations on Sunday.

All results are on the table here, but the visitors could come away with a much-needed three points.

Prediction: Everton 1-2 Tottenham
