Ruben Amorim has warned Manchester United players and fans that they will continue to suffer until the end of the season.
United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion was their sixth home defeat in the Premier League this season and fourth under Amorim’s leadership.
The Portuguese coach made no compromises in his post-match media duties, suggesting United’s current squad may be the worst in the club’s 147-year history. And he warned that more suffering may lie ahead for all involved, reiterating that he will not change his beliefs or methods to change things.
“That is clear to me. For me it is clear that I will not change my view of the game,” said Amorim when asked if it was time to do things differently. “I’m very clear about that. The players will suffer and the fans will suffer. I’m really sorry, I have a way of doing things.”
“We have to get through this moment and it is very clear to everyone what we will do. I have explained this situation. I’m going to play the way I play because that was the idea. I was very clear about everything, to the fans, the board and everyone.
“They knew what to expect from me. But that’s not the most important thing, it’s not acceptable to lose so many games. Losing four and winning one in five home games is really difficult for any club. Imagine that at Manchester United – so we have to improve.”
Amorim’s honesty led him to admit that United “need to be a different team” if they want to progress. The former Sporting CP coach admitted things were far too easy for a Brighton side who are now just four points away from the Premier League’s top four.
“You have to understand the moment, but also understand that it’s not about losing so many games in the Premier League, no matter the situation. No matter what moment. This shouldn’t happen,” Amorim said.
“They felt comfortable and we tried not very good football. You can watch this game and not remember anything. We can’t finish the game the same way if everyone isn’t in the right position. So we have to end the game differently. No. No matter what the result is, we have to be a different team.
