Jose Mourinho in transfer raid on Aston Villa with Unai Emery’s side to take £16million hit

According to The Pitch Prospect, Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos will undergo a medical ahead of his £10million move to Fenerbahce.

The centre-back is on track to join the Turkish giants in January after being identified as a top target by Jose Mourinho.

Carlos is expected to complete his move to Fenerbahce in January.

Villa signed Carlos from Sevilla in 2022 for a reported £26m.

That means they are prepared to incur a £16million loss on the Brazilian.

With Carlos out, Villa are working on a deal to sign his replacement by turning to Sevilla again to bring in Frenchman Loic Bade.

The Pitch Prospect reported earlier this month that Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza was also interested in Villa.

But it appears the Midlands side have instead chosen French youth international Bade to bolster their defense.

Carlos joined Villa Park after three years at Sevilla, where he won the Europa League.

The defender had an unfortunate start to life at Villa after tearing his Achilles tendon on just his second appearance.

He underwent surgery and only appeared once in the 2022/23 season, but then became a key player the following season, appearing in 38 games.

Carlos has made a total of 58 appearances in all competitions – 17 of them this season – but only eight of those have been as starters in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old has missed the last three games with a foot injury, so he could well have made his final appearance for Unai Emery’s side.

With a move to Fenerbahce, he joins a team where Caglar Soyuncu and Alexander Djiku regularly play as central defenders.

The Istanbul club had expressed interest in Newcastle’s Lloyd Kelly, but like Italian club Juventus saw a rejection.

Mourinho ensures Fenerbahce finish second in the Turkish Süper Lig in his first season at the club.

They have won four of their last five games in all competitions and sit 21st in the league stage of the Europa League.

Things haven’t been entirely smooth sailing for Mourinho in Turkey, as he recently declared a “scandal” and also previously claimed that a VAR official’s decisions “smelled bad.”

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United coach’s contract with Fenerbahce runs until 2026.
