Chelsea vs Arsenal – WSL: Preview, predictions and lineups

Chelsea are in the Women’s Super League (WSL) this weekend against London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

Sonia Bompastor’s side are unbeaten in their first 11 games and have dropped points on just one occasion. They are comfortable on the table and are seven points ahead of Sunday’s opponents in second place.

A win for Chelsea would serve as another major statement in this season’s title race, as the Blues would make it six league titles in a row. As things stand, they are on track to do so, while their form in the Champions League has also been very promising.

Here is 90 minutes Guide to the biggest game in the WSL this weekend…

Chelsea remain without long-term absences Sophie Ingle, Kadeisha Buchanan and Aniek Nouwen have recently suffered ACL injuries and will miss the rest of the season. Sam Kerr and Mia Fishel suffered the same injury about 12 months ago but this weekend’s game is unlikely to return with February or March a more realistic target.

Young defender Maelys Mpome was injured in December but returned to the squad for the final WSL outing against West Ham. However, Wieke Kaptein and Lucy Bronze were both absent.

Chelsea predicted the line-up against Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Hampton; Bronze, Bjorn, Hell, Charles; Cuthbert, Nusken; Kaneryd, Macario, Baltimore; Ramirez

Victoria Pelova

Victoria Pelova has been sidelined since the summer with an ACL injury, while Amanda Ilestt is preparing for a return after giving birth to her first child. Renee Slegers confirmed this week that the pair have joined the team in training, but their exact return dates are still unknown.

Stina Blackstenius was absent against Crystal Palace last week due to illness but is back in training this week. Lina Hurig also missed her last WSL game and is taking part in some team training.

Arsenal predicted line-up against Chelsea (3-4-2-1): Van Domselaar; Fox, Williamson, Catley; Maanum, Little, Cooney-Cross, McCabe; Mead, Caldentey; Russo

As is often the case between these two teams, it will undoubtedly be a close and very competitive game. The result will have a significant impact on the title race as a win for Arsenal will take them within four points of their rivals.

On the other hand, Chelsea will be determined to add to their cushion at the top of the standings and their form has arguably been unwavering this season. Bompastor’s side are showing no signs of slowing down, so it’s difficult to see anything other than a Chelsea win, especially at Stamford Bridge.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal
