Aston Villa hosts West Ham United for the second time this January, with the two red and blue opponents facing off in the Premier League on Sunday.
Graham Potter’s first game as West Ham manager saw the two sides meet in the third round of the FA Cup. However, the former Chelsea coach was unsuccessful on his debut at Villa Park and the Irons suffered a 2-1 defeat. This weekend they will seek revenge.
West Ham must do their best to escape the Midlands without a defeat, meaning significant improvement is needed after last weekend’s poor home defeat to Crystal Palace. Injuries to the forward line posed an unwanted challenge at the start of Potter’s reign and he will be hoping for reinforcements in the winter.
Despite an unusually lethargic defeat to Monaco in the Champions League midweek, Villa have started the new year in impressive form. They won their first three games in 2025 before staging a two-goal comeback at Arsenal last weekend to salvage a valuable point.

It is doubtful whether Amadou Onana will feature this weekend after suffering a hamstring injury in the draw against Arsenal last weekend. The midfielder played just 37 minutes before being substituted and could subsequently be unavailable for West Ham’s visit.
Fellow midfielder Ross Barkley is missing from Villa but John McGinn is close to a return after a hamstring injury. However, the Scotland international could still be out this weekend.
Pau Torres is still in the treatment room and the departure of Diego Carlos means Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings will have to be deployed again at centre-back.
Aston Villa line-up against West Ham (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; Kamara, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, Ramsey; Watkins.
West Ham are currently short on attacking options but could welcome captain Jarrod Bowen back into the squad after Graham Potter revealed he has been reintegrated into training. Crysencio Summerville is also close to returning, although Sunday’s duel will come too early, but Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug are out.
Due to Konstantinos Mavropanos’ suspension, Potter will also have to change his defense but is unlikely to have Jean-Clair Todibo available.
West Ham vs Aston Villa line-up (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Wan Bissaka, Kilman, Cresswell; Coufal, Alvarez, Rodriguez, Emerson; Paqueta, Soucek; Kudus.
West Ham were immensely disappointing in their defeat to Palace last weekend, managing an XG of just 0.28 at the London Stadium. Not only did they fail to create chances, the Hammers also struggled to contain them
Palace’s speed and power on the counter-attack.
Villa are prepared to cause them similar problems on Sunday with their tricky forward band and even the energy expended during the week should not stop Unai Emery’s side from claiming a third win against the Irons this season.
