Arsenal had to thank the striker Mikel Merino when they achieved a non-convincing 2-0 victory in Leicester City on Saturday.
Since so many important strikers were missing from injury, it was no surprise that Arsenal’s front line is fighting for fluid. The starting striker Leandro Trossard had a handful of half a chance before the interval, but maybe the best chance of the first half had the penultimate kick when Wilfred Ndidi steered.
In the second half there was definitely more energy over the Gunners. The lively Ethan Nwaneri hit the wood twice, but Arsenal continued to fight for opportunities, with midfielder Merino putting the bank off to fill the emptiness in the attack.
In ten minutes it was Merino who saved the day and dived with a header to lead Nwaneris cross into the back of Mads Hermansen’s network, and the Spaniard added a second in the dying embers with an intelligent tap-in on the back . Post to remove doubts about the result.
