FIFA reveal details for new Women’s Club World Cup

FIFA has confirmed the start of a 16-team women’s club world championship, which is due to debut in 2028.

The tournament, which was originally planned for 2026, was brought to the queue after the endurance of the management committee to ensure that there is enough space for the competition in the football calendar.

In view of the start after a FIFA consulting meeting on Wednesday evening, the Women’s Club World Cup has now been confirmed for a start in January to 2028.

The tournament, which is to take place every four years, will contain 16 teams from all over the world, each with a different way to qualify. Asia, Africa, Concacaf and South America each receive two automatic areas in the group phases, with the UEFA five. Clubs from other associations will compete in Playoff stages with six teams from separate associations, with three places to be won.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “The FIFA Women Club World Championship will be a decisive moment in the growth of the women’s club football and give the world’s best clubs the platform that they deserve to compete against the best and bring the women’s club game into the global spotlight.”

In the meantime, FIFA will start the Champions Cup in 2026. The competition with six teams takes place annually, without the years in which the World Club Championship is played. The opening champions cup takes place between January 27, 2026 and January 31, 2026 and will be affected by the youngest continental champion of the individual Confederation, including the winner of the Champions League this season.
