Manchester City confirmed the departure of head coach Gareth Taylor after five years, with the former boss Nick Cushing returned to the club as a provisional replacement.
The 52-year-old worked with the club’s academy before taking over the management of the women’s team in 2020. This season he led them to the FA Cup gloss, while in 2022 they reached the final again and won the league cup in the same year.
The last season was the best league campaign from City under his leadership when they promoted the later master Chelsea until the last day. Although they had completed the WSL campaign with a win over the Aston Villa, they narrowly missed the goal differences.
However, this season was a different story. With injuries to the most important players, City has trouble keeping the pace at the top of the table, and is currently fourth in the overall ranking, 12 points from Chelsea.
City has confirmed that the former head coach Nick Cushing will temporarily take over the team by the end of the season. Cushing, who recently left his role as a manager of the MLS Side New York City FC, won the WSL, the League Cup and the FA Cup during its previous spell at City between 2013 and 2020.
The managing director Charlotte O’Neill said: “Manchester City is proud to compete at the head of the WSL and in his outstanding recording of the qualification for European competition. Unfortunately, the results have not yet reached this high standard this season.
“With six games in the WSL campaign, we believe that a change in management will breathe into a fresh life to our offer to ensure the qualification for the UEFA women’s champions League 2025/26.
“We would like to thank Gareth for all his efforts in his many years in City. Our triumph of the Fa Cup and the Liga Cup will remain special moments in the history of this football club. We wish him all the best for the future.”
City is won over Aston Villa against Aston Villa against Aston Villa against Aston Villa on Sunday. In the coming weeks you will compete four times against rival Chelsea in three different competitions of 13 days, starting with the final of the League Cup of this weekend.
