The Liverpool Manager Arne Slot offered his support for the unexplained midfielder Harvey Elliott, who played significantly less under the Dutch than before under Jürgen Klopp.
Elliott started only four games this season, three in the ties of the domestic cup and the other a Champions League Dead rubber. It has led to suggestions that the 22-year-old could develop this summer in the middle of Newcastle United, in particular of interest.
Elliott missed two months of the season with a broken foot before Christmas, which Slot was a factor for limited opportunities. After the youngsters were recovered in November, the boss then hesitated to make excessive tinkering what he found as a winning formula.
“I think it is very important that players who are here with us like to stay. This is a big compliment for everyone who works here,” said Slot and implied that Elliott was not looking for a transmission behind the scenes.
Elliott had publicly proposed in the same way at the beginning of this week and promised his commitment to Liverpool despite the frustrating and “difficult” circumstances in which he was.
“Harvey is one of the players who didn’t have as much season as he might deserve it,” said Slot.
“But as with some others, he is in competition with so many good players who mainly [I] I selected other players. Also partially because he was injured for a long time and I was honest with him. “
The boss continued: “The first part, after he had come back from his injury, was not the same as before his injury. But in the past few months he has been back to his old level, but I didn’t have to start with different players. I think when you look at the number of minutes that he has been in the last or months when I had it in the past few months.
The games that Elliott played this season have come in a variety of positions on both flanks, in central midfield and number 10.
His contract, signed in 2022, lasts until 2027, with the evaluation of £ 40 million being Liverpool.
