Manchester City defender Alanna Kennedy has announced that she will be leaving the club with immediate effect.
The defender took to social media on Tuesday morning to announce the news, telling City fans: “Manchester has been my home for three and a half years and I go back with lots of great memories.”
“I experienced some real highlights of my career in this team and made some friends for life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during my time here.”
Kennedy has made 64 appearances during her City tenure, including appearances during the team’s FA Women’s League Cup winning run in the 2021/22 season.
Fans expressed their suspicions about Kennedy’s departure after the defender was left out of the City squad that lost 4-2 to Manchester United last weekend as the Women’s Super League (WSL) returned after the winter break.
Kennedy confirmed the news and wished her teammates well as they prepare to start the business end of the season. “Lastly, I would like to thank my teammates,” she wrote. “It was a privilege to play alongside all of you and I wish you continued success for the rest of the season and beyond.”
The departure will be a major concern for City fans as captain Alex Greenwood is currently facing a lengthy layoff after tearing his MCL before Christmas. Gareth Taylor will be banking on the January signing of defender Rebecca Knaak from FC Rosengard to bolster his defense ahead of a hectic run of games.
