On Thursday evening, Amad Diallo became the first Manchester United player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League since Cristiano Ronaldo almost three years ago.
It wasn’t until the 82nd minute of the dramatic duel against Southampton that United’s current talisman scored his first goal. Amad’s first attempt was blocked by a quickly fading Kyle Walker-Peters, but the ball bounced kindly for the Ivorian, who coolly slotted past Aaron Ramsdale at the second attempt.
Combined with Christian Eriksen, Amad gave United the lead for the first time of the night in the 90th minute, firing a volley past the former Arsenal goalkeeper. As Old Trafford thrived in unison and a collective sense of shock and awe spread across the crowd ready to celebrate a victory after a largely listless performance, the club’s renowned savior completed his hat-trick in stoppage time.
Not only was it the first hat-trick of Amad’s professional career – he doubled his Premier League goal tally in eight second-half minutes this season – but it was also the first treble United have scored in the top flight since Ronaldo delivered the goods against Norwich City in April 2022.

Between United’s last two outings, there have been 34 Premier League hat-tricks, scored by 22 unique players for 14 different clubs. Erling Haaland alone had collected eight match points – including one in a Manchester derby.
This is not a modern phenomenon.
Much like most statistics that are even remotely positive, Manchester United’s hat-trick tally has fallen dramatically since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. The Red Devils won the title this year with three goals from Robin van Persie against Aston Villa, but failed. It was only in June 2020 that Anthony Martial was able to record another treble in the top flight when Sheffield United visited.
Bruno Fernandes completes the quartet of players who have scored a Premier League hat-trick for United since Ferguson. Including Romelu Lukaku’s three goals in Ferguson’s crazy farewell game, six different players have scored a hat-trick against the club in the same period.
