Anthony Gordon linked with dream move which would infuriate Everton fans even more

Anthony Gordon’s transfer dream seems to have been denied and he could move to his boyhood club Liverpool this summer.

The Pitch Prospect has learned that the Reds have made preliminary enquiries to bring the former Everton winger back to Merseyside from Newcastle, but talks between the clubs have since broken down.

Other reports say Newcastle were willing to cash in on the England international to comply with PSR rules, but wanted a Liverpool player in return as part of a swap deal.

According to the Daily Mail, the player Eddie Howe and the Magpies wanted was 21-year-old centre-back Jarell Quansah.

But Anfield chiefs rejected this option as Quansah was seen as a future star of the club, having already been a regular and reliable first-team player.

With a swap deal seemingly off the table, The Pitch Prospect understands Newcastle do not want to sell Gordon or star Alexander Isak – who has been linked with a move to Chelsea – this summer.

However, they would consider a £40 million offer for wonderkid Yankuba Minteh, with Brighton interested in the winger.

While the Magpies are under pressure to offload players before Sunday’s PSR deadline, the club has made it clear to all interested parties that it would take a huge offer to land one of their attackers.

It may have come as a surprise to some that a former Everton player was in talks to move to their arch-rivals across Stanley Park.

But what you may not know, and what Everton fans would like to forget, is that Gordon has been a Liverpool fan since childhood and is still a huge supporter of the Anfield club.

Gordon and Jones are also friends off the field and were teammates in the England U21 national team.

Gordon even played for Liverpool for a while in his young career before being released by the Reds at the age of 11 and subsequently signed by Everton.

He also remains good pals with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, having come through the club’s Kirkby Academy together, and is also close to Reds stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez through the England national team.

Gordon has made no secret of it either.

His reputation among Everton fans may have been tarnished by his £40 million move to St James’ Park in 2023, but it was perhaps destroyed forever when he later named a Liverpool legend as his all-time football hero.

“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” he told Gary Neville on The Overlap.

“He came from Liverpool, was like a god in Liverpool and an incredible player.”

He also named current Reds superstar Mohamed Salah as one of his biggest inspirations in today’s game, making comments that further infuriated Toffees fans.

“My confidence comes from my preparation,” he told Neville. “Some footballers prefer to think less, just turn up, play and trust their instincts. I just love the attitude of getting myself to that point before I get there.”

“I heard Mo Salah talking about it – that made me even more interested because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. With people like that, you can’t go wrong if you follow what they do.”

One angry Bluenose wrote in X in response to the interview: “Antony Gordon takes every opportunity to tell Everton fans that he supports Liverpool.”

Gordon also revealed that he loves playing at Liverpool’s home stadium.

When asked by Channel 4 from the English camp about his favourite atmosphere in the Premier League, he said: “Apart from St James’, it’s Anfield by far.”

“Maybe it’s because I’m from the city and grew up watching, but I just think when they sing YNWA before the game, that’s top notch.”

Now Gordon must first try his hand at Euro 2024 with England after recovering from a cycling accident during a recovery session on Thursday.

But it seems that his dream of playing in the red jersey is not completely off the table.
