Arsenal send scouts for new striker target with Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres unattainable

Arsenal have reportedly considered Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui as an alternative transfer target for Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.

The Gunners are expected to invest in new talent during the January transfer window to strengthen their Premier League title claims.

Kai Havertz has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season and Gabriel Jesus has rediscovered his form with five goals in two games.

However, Arsenal are still interested in other attacking options, with Isak and Gyokeres two notable names thought to be on their radar.

Isak scored a hat-trick in Newcastle’s 4-0 win at Ipswich Town on Saturday, taking his goal tally for the season to 11.

Gyokeres has been in sensational form for Sporting Lisbon, with his fellow Swede scoring 27 times in 26 appearances.

However, The Sun reported last month that neither striker is likely to join Arsenal.

Barcelona are said to have Isak as their number one summer target and Gyokeres wants to work with Ruben Amorim again at Manchester United.

Arsenal may therefore look for other options to strengthen their attack, with Atalanta’s Retegui emerging as a potential target.

Reputable Italian media CalcioMercato reports that the Gunners sent scouts to watch the 25-year-old in action in November.

They were present in Atalanta’s 6-1 Champions League win at Young Boys, in which Retegui scored two goals.

The Italian has scored 14 goals in all competitions this season, including 12 in Serie A, making him the top goalscorer.

Arsenal sent scouts to watch Atalanta star Retegui.

Retegui played in the academies of Argentine giants River Plate and Boca Juniors before playing for their senior national team.

After three loan spells at Boca, he signed with Genoa in Italy in 2023 before moving to Atalanta in the summer.

Arsenal could make a smart signing if they opt for Retegui, who is currently suffering from a hamstring injury.

Earlier this month, head coach Mikel Arteta hinted that new signings would be made in January ahead of the second half of the season.

“The window gives us the opportunity to strengthen the team if we feel it is necessary and we feel we have the ability to do so.”

“It’s our turn and we just have to assess the situation because it changes every week. Not for the better at the moment, but I’m confident we’ll be in a better place in a few weeks.”

Arsenal remain third in the Premier League after their 5-1 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.

However, they are six points behind leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand after the postponed Merseyside derby against Everton.
