In May, the club confirmed that Young had been offered a new one-year contract.

Now the former Aston Villa star has confirmed that the process is almost complete.

“We are close to sorting everything out,” he said on the TalkSPORT breakfast show. “There were discussions in the summer.”

“Now all that’s left is to sort out the details and then I’ll sign the contract.”

The former Manchester United left-back made 34 appearances for the Merseyside side, scoring one goal.

He helped save Everton from relegation, while Sean Dyche’s side faced an uphill battle after being deducted a total of eight points for breaches of profitability and sustainability rules.

The Toffees finished the season in 15th place, four points above the relegation zone.

Last week, The Pitch Prospect reported that Everton owner Farhad Moshiri had accepted an offer from Roma owner Dan Friedkin for the club.

Young’s experience was crucial for Everton in a difficult period.

Previously, there were months of uncertainty about who the club’s new owners would be, including the ill-fated takeover attempt by 777 Partners.

Meanwhile, Young, now 38, is expected to continue his time at Goodison Park.

Ashley Young believes England should play with two number 10s in Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden, leaving Declan Rice as the only defensive midfielder

He began his career at Watford after coming through the Hornets’ academy in 2003.

In 2007, the defender moved to Aston Villa before playing the most games of his career (261) at Manchester United.

Young won the most recent Premier League trophy with the Red Devils in 2013, as well as the FA Cup in 2016 and the Europa League in 2017.

After leaving Old Trafford in 2020, Young played for Inter Milan, returned to Villa and will now continue his 21-year senior career at Everton.

Young also won 39 caps for England between 2007 and 2017 and is part of The Pitch Prospect’s coverage of this summer’s European Championships.
