Bayern Munich chief says Oliver Glasner was ‘very keen’ on joining but Crystal Palace ‘didn’t release him’

The honorary president of FC Bayern Munich, Uli Hoeneß, has claimed that Crystal Palace did not let Oliver Glasner go to become coach.

Glasner joined the Eagles in February as Roy Hodgson’s successor and led them to tenth place in the Premier League after an impressive start at Selhurst Park.

Glasner aroused Bayern’s interest just a few weeks after taking office at Palace.

Due to his impressive start, it was announced that FC Bayern was interested in signing the Austrian as a replacement for Thomas Tuchel.

However, Palace estimated his value at a whopping 100 million euros [£84million] to retain his services before the summer.

Hoeneß has since confirmed their attempts to bring Glasner to the club before finally signing Vincent Kompany.

“We spoke to Glasner, who we also liked,” he said about Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg.

“He absolutely wanted to go to FC Bayern, absolutely. But his club didn’t release him and FC Bayern isn’t all-powerful either.”

Glasner won seven of his first 13 games as Palace manager, with a 3-0 victory over Burnley in his first appearance in charge.

They remained unbeaten in their last seven games of the season, winning against Liverpool and Manchester United, among others.

Among those who shone under Glasner was Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored an incredible 13 goals in as many appearances.

Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise also scored ten goals and provided six assists between them as Palace shone in recent weeks.

However, they will start the new season without the latter after he completed his move to FC Bayern earlier this month.

Olise is moving to coach Vincent Kompany at the top German club after the club failed to win a trophy in a season for the first time since 2012.

Palace, on the other hand, are preparing for their first full season with Glasner, but if he continues his success there, it could be another challenge for the club to keep him.
