Borussia Dortmund make key decision on Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka after Club World Cup exit

Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl announced that he would like to keep Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka in the club.

The 21-year-old came to Dortmund in February and had 16 appearances last season.

Chukwuemeka was also part of the Dortmund Club World Cup squad, with Chelsea expanding his loan to the KO level.

Since Dortmund loses against Real Madrid on Saturday in the quarterfinals, Chukwuemeka’s loan has now come to an end, but Kehl believes that it couldn’t be the last time that it is highlighted in black and yellow.

“Carney’s loan ends today,” said Kehl on Saturday after Dortmund’s 3-2 defeat against Real in New Jersey.

“That was what we agreed with Chelsea. Well, let’s see.

“Now see how we manage everything. It will not be easy, but we will definitely try to keep it because he is a very good player. This topic is something for the future, and at the moment I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Chelsea Value Chukwuemeka for 40 million GBP, the same number as its publication clause. This makes a permanent transmission for Dortmund difficult, unless the price drops.

Talksport understands that Dortmund is open to another loan, possibly with an option or an obligation to buy, and that discussions about the maintenance of Chukwuemeka have started over the last season in May.

“It is always easier to borrow a player than to buy one, especially within Carney’s [price] Reach. But let’s see, “said Kehl.” We are not that far advanced [in talks] At the moment, but I can tell you that we are pretty close to the player, and he loves Dortmund, so that’s pretty good. Everything else is decided between Chelsea and us. That won’t be tomorrow. That won’t be on Tuesday. I think it will take a few more days. “

Dortmund and Chelsea enjoy an excellent relationship and have already done business this summer. Jamie Gitten’s’ £ 52 million to Chelsea was officially made on Saturday, with the 20-year-old winger signed a seven-year contract.

Chelsea had originally wanted Gittens until June 10, so that they could play him at the World Club, but Dortmund was held by her evaluation. This resulted in the deal was agreed at the end of June when the Gitten were already connected to a trophy for the tournament.

“Jamie’s move is now finished,” confirmed Kehl. “We have had many discussions with Chelsea in the past few weeks. We rejected an offer on June 10, but now we have found an agreement.

“Jamie wanted to take this next step, and Chelsea will get a very professional and highly motivated young player who still has a lot of potential. We built it here in Dortmund for five years. He is a great child and we wish him all the best.”

By reaching the quarter -finals, Dortmund leaves the Club World Championship with around £ 38 million in prize money, not far away what they need to permanently sign Chukwuemeka and more money than before the tournament budgeted.

This summer a significant reinvestment will be held in the play squad because Dortmund tries to bridge the gap of Champions Bavaria, which they ended disappointing 25 points last season.

Dortmund, however, was still fourth, so they have the Champions League football in 2025/26.

Some are wondering whether the World Cup participant of the Club World Champion could have a tournament cat next season due to fatigue, but overall Kehl believes that Dortmund’s time was a success in America.

“The evaluation of this tournament is a big question that touches many different topics,” he said. “Firstly, we achieved a great performance by reaching the quarter -finals. We were again one of the eight eight teams in the world after we were one of the eight of the best Europe in the Champions League. It was a sporting success on our side.

“And then there is the financial component. We did not budget the quarter -finals and therefore brought a little more income than planned. Now we will go away and think about how we spend this money before the new season to increase our team’s performance.

“This tournament has created many different topics. There are start times, the weather and the pitch conditions. I think there are some things that FIFA can work on before the 2026 World Cup. Overall, it was a good tournament for us.

“You can see that even the stadiums are now quite full. Bavaria against PSG was full, and our game against Real Madrid was also almost full. The atmosphere is much higher than in the group stadiums, which is quite normal.

“We are pretty happy and proud that we could show our ‘black and yellow’ to the world again. Our colors are quite well known all over the world, and we are always happy to show you [in America]. “
