Brighton agree record deal to sign Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh to boost Magpies’ hopes of keeping top stars

As The Pitch Prospect has learned, Brighton and Newcastle have agreed on a transfer fee of £30 million for starlet Yankuba Minteh.

Newcastle were keen to sell Minteh, who played on loan at Feyenoord last season, in order to comply with strict profit and sustainability rules.

The Magpies have given permission to speak to Brighton for the Gambian international, who will now fly in to speak to the south coast club.

And they have negotiated a transfer fee that would see Brighton break the club’s previous record, set last year by Joao Pedro, who joined from Watford for just under £30 million.

Minteh, who has never played a game for the Magpies, is expected to join the Seagulls for a transfer fee just above that.

Newcastle have been trying to offload the 19-year-old before June 30, the end of the Premier League financial year, with clubs rushing to meet PSR deadlines.

This sale allows Newcastle to keep its star trio of Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimares and Anthony Gordon, who were discussed leaving the club to solve the PSR problems.

There has been a lot of interest in Minteh over the past four weeks after he had an impressive season under new coach Arne Slot.

In 27 Eredivisie games as a loan player at Feyenoord, the prodigy scored eleven goals and was an important part of the team that won the KNVB Cup.

Everton was just as interested in the young player as Lyon, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund and Roma.

But Minteh was only interested in staying in the Premier League and the deal suits all parties.

The Gambian international only came to Newcastle last summer from the Danish club Odense Boldklub.

However, he was immediately loaned to Feyenoord, where he became a key player.

Brighton are looking to bring in reinforcements and support their new coach Fabian Hurzeler, who has replaced Roberto De Zerbi.

The 31-year-old is also keen to keep two key players who have been linked with a transfer to Germany.
