Chelsea ‘agree’ loan deal with Juventus for defender chased by Borussia Dortmund

Chelsea agreed to this loan According to various reports, Renato Veiga is joining Juventus for the rest of the season.

The versatile defender has been linked with numerous clubs this summer. Napoli were briefly considered a strong suitor while Veiga was reportedly negotiating a deal with Borussia Dortmund, but Juve appear to have won the race for the 21-year-old.

The Blues were believed to be asking for up to £29m for a permanent deal this month – Veiga arrived from Basel six months ago in a transfer worth just £11.8m.

Fabrizio Romano claimed that Juventus had agreed a six-month loan deal. The Serie A club will pay a transfer fee of €5m (£4.2m) before Veiga returns to Chelsea on June 30, in time for the knockout stages of this summer’s expanded Club World Cup.

Veiga has been widely praised by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca this season. He praised the Portuguese international for his versatility and gave him 18 appearances across all competitions – as many as regular striker Jadon Sancho.

However, Veiga became increasingly frustrated with Maresca’s insistence on playing him as an inverted left-back, moving into midfield, rather than as a centre-back, they said BBC. Romano reports that Veiga will play in his preferred position at Juventus, which is lacking defensive options following season-ending injuries to Juan Cabal and Gleison Bremer.

The Blues have already marked an early return for Trevoh Chalobah, sending the former Crystal Palace loanee back to Stamford Bridge where he was quickly introduced into the first team against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

Chelsea are also looking for new additions in midfield and are challenging Arsenal in their search for a new striker.
