Crystal Palace vs Brentford: Preview, predictions and lineups

Crystal Palace will be looking to continue their impressive resurgence on Sunday afternoon when they host fellow Londoners Brentford in the Premier League.

After a challenging start to the season, the Eagles have found their footing under Oliver Glasner and are now unbeaten in six games, four of which ended in a win. Back-to-back 2-0 away wins have left them just a single point behind Sunday’s opponents.

Brentford have been comparatively inconsistent since the turn of the year, winning just one of their last nine games in all competitions – the 5-0 win against bottom-placed Southampton. The Bees have been surprisingly outspoken away from home this season and will be hoping for their second away win in the Premier League.

Palace suffered setbacks this week when Glasner confirmed that Chadi Riad and Cheick Doucour will miss this Sunday with knee injuries. No time frame has been set for the return of the duo, who join Adam Wharton and Joel Ward in the treatment room.

Matheus Franca is out for a long time, but the Brazilian is back in training. He won’t be ready for Sunday but Jefferson Lerma could make his comeback after missing the game against West Ham due to illness.

New January recruit Romain Esse, who arrived from Millwall for £14.5m, could be involved in some capacity.

Crystal Palace’s expected line-up against Brentford (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Richards, Lacroix, Guehi; Munoz, Hughes, Kamada, Mitchell; Sarr, Eze; Mateta.

Kristoffer Ajer

Brentford have a much longer injury list ahead of Sunday’s encounter, with long-term absentees Aaron Hickey, Gustavo Nunes and Joshua Dasilva all still missing.

Igor Thiago is missing up front and central defender Ethan Pinnock is still unavailable due to injury. The better news, however, is that Frank Kristoffer will welcome Ajer back into the squad and the defender will be in the squad for the trip across the capital.

The recent acquisition of Fiorentina loanee Michael Kayode should help bolster the injury-hit defence, but the full-back will not receive international clearance in time for the weekend as he only signed on Friday.

Predicted Brentford line-up against Crystal Palace (4-3-3): spots; Roerslev, Collins, Van den Berg, Lewis Potter; Jensen, Norgaard, Yarmolyuk; Mbeumo, Wissa, what a shame.

Palace are in positive form heading into Sunday’s clash and continue to climb up the table. Jean-Philippe Mateta’s sharp shot has helped the Eagles soar in recent weeks. Their attacking talent is likely to unsettle Brentford, who have kept just three clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

In Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford have attacking options capable of breaking through the Palace defense which has kept three clean sheets in a row, but they may still find themselves on the wrong end of the 2-1 result, which gave them preference in the second leg August.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-1 Brentford
