Eddie Howe admits there could still be Newcastle exits despite ‘challenging’ transfer window being over

Eddie Howe has described Newcastle’s transfer window activity as “challenging” following his side’s win against Tottenham.

Although Howe is frustrated by the number of new arrivals, he believes there could still be some departures from Newcastle this month as transfer windows are still open in other countries.

“Challenging [summer] In a word, challenging, because we knew before the transfer that it would be challenging and that hasn’t changed. I can only tell you how I feel and that applies to everyone involved with the club.

“There is no one else in a position connected to the club who wants to do as good a job as we all do and try to improve the squad. It has been a challenge. But by not spending the amounts that were perhaps expected, hopefully that will help us in future transfer windows.

“I don’t know as I sit here today. Hopefully this will give us a little more freedom in the future to be a little more proactive.”

Kieran Trippier, who announced his retirement from international football this week, remained on the bench for the encounter.

The former English international was interested by Saudi Arabia and Turkey, whose transfer windows do not close until October 6 and September 13 respectively. Trippier was also linked with Everton earlier this summer.

And it is a move in the latter direction that Howe stopped after the game against Spurs.

“Absolutely, I want Kieran here,” said the Magpies boss. “That hasn’t changed and it’s not going to change. I’ve been made aware of the stories through a few news stories, as you do, but that’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

He continued: “Perhaps the players who have been linked with a move, like Jamal Lewis, could leave. But of course we hope that no one else leaves.”
