Everton have announced the signing of young midfielder Emma Watson on loan from Manchester United for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
Watson moves to Merseyside following her comeback from a cruciate ligament injury which caused her to miss her entire debut season with United. The midfielder continued to wait for her debut after suffering a minor problem earlier this season, which coincidentally came against her new team as they beat Everton 2-0 in the group stage of the Subway Women’s League Cup.
The 18-year-old had to be patient as he found it difficult to get minutes, but in the final stages of the calendar year he scored his first goal against Championship side Newcastle United.
Despite her age, Watson has already managed to break into the Scottish national team. The midfielder appeared in games against Hungary and Finland in the UEFA Euro 2025 qualifiers, coming on as a substitute in all four cases. Watson has made eight appearances for Scotland since making her debut in March 2023.
The Toffees have secured the signing of the impressive prospect in what has already been an eventful transfer window for the Merseyside club. Brian Sorensen’s team has welcomed Kelly Gago and Martina Fernandez to its ranks, and Hayley Ladd is also reportedly set for a move.
Speaking to Everton’s official website following her arrival, Watson expressed her excitement about joining the club: “I definitely think it’s a place that really suits me and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Everton will be back in action this weekend when they host Tottenham Hotspur in an all-WSL Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Walton Hall Park.
