Struggling Manchester United endure a nightmare start to the new year when they travel to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils have lost their last four games in all competitions and are struggling to adapt to life under new coach Ruben Amorim. League leaders and Man Utd’s nemesis Liverpool could cause them even more trouble this weekend.
Injuries have been an issue for Man Utd this season and they are still without a number of key players, although the treatment room has emptied over the last month.
Here are the Man Utd players missing for the weekend game on Merseyside.
Marcus Rashford’s future does not appear to lie at Old Trafford, with the winger being exiled in recent weeks due to disciplinary issues and a misjudged public interview. However, the academy’s youngsters were part of the squad that was disbanded by Newcastle United last Monday, even if they did not take to the pitch.
Rashford has a strong record against Liverpool and could have played some minutes at Anfield, but he will not be available for selection due to illness. With the January transfer window now open, it is possible that he has played his last game for the club.
Mason Mount has been unlucky with injuries since joining Chelsea for Man Utd and the midfielder is out again. The 25-year-old, who made a name for himself early on at Amorim, suffered a muscle injury in the Manchester derby.
Mount is expected to return in the coming weeks but will not be available against Liverpool – a club who were interested in signing him before his nightmarish move to Old Trafford.
Similar to his compatriot Mount, left-back Luke Shaw simply cannot stay fit. The Englishman missed the first few months of the season after suffering an injury setback following Euro 2024 and only made his first appearance for the Red Devils in Amorim’s debut against Ipswich Town.
However, after just three appearances, Shaw suffered a new injury blow which has ruled him out of Sunday’s trip to Anfield.
Victor Lindelof is another player who has rarely featured this season due to persistent and persistent injuries. The Swede was also missing this weekend. He was last seen in the dramatic 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur but suffered another injury in north London.
No official timeframe has been set for Lindelof’s return, but it would be unlikely that the centre-back would still start at Anfield.
