Ian Maatsen’s dad takes aim at Chelsea and confirms negotiations for son to stay at Borussia Dortmund

Ian Maatsen’s father has taken a swipe at the Chelsea owners, claiming his son wants to stay at Borussia Dortmund.

Maatsen joined the Bundesliga giants on loan in January after failing to establish himself as a first-team player at Stamford Bridge.

Since then, the 22-year-old has played a key role for Dortmund on their way to the Champions League semi-finals, scoring in their impressive quarter-final win over Atlético Madrid.

Maatsen is enjoying his time under coach Edin Terzic and has set his sights on staying with the German club, although other options are on the table.

Maatsen’s father Edward says a permanent move to the German club would mean a “good new start” away from Stamford Bridge for his son, before taking a dig at Chelsea’s new owners.

“We are working on staying in the club [Dortmund]” Edward told Voetbal International.

“The clubs have to get along with each other. Ian is doing well here and things haven’t been going well at Chelsea since they changed ownership.”

“A lot of this club revolves around money, which sometimes seems to be more important than the interests of the club. We have more options besides Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund has proven to be a good restart.”

“And look at what guys come from there, Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland.”

Maatsen himself admitted that he was open to the various options that have arisen since resuming his career in Germany.

Asked if he regretted staying at Chelsea for the first half of the season, he told the Telegraph: “Yes, it plays a role, but I still believed that my chance would come through patience and hard work .”

“For some reason it didn’t work out and after that you have to find a solution and the deal came about between Dortmund and Chelsea. I also have to thank Chelsea for having me here and for giving me this opportunity.”

“I think the belief from the [Dortmund] board, the coach, the technical directors, they are all on the same page. They all believe in me, that I am a talented player who can achieve top performance, and they gave me this chance.

“I think it’s something special for players, young players, to come to this big club like BVB and show their skills to the whole world. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.”
