James Trafford could seal immediate Premier League return as Chelsea and Newcastle eye England goalkeeper

As The Pitch Prospect has learned, both Newcastle and Chelsea are interested in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

After being relegated from the Premier League, the Clarets are open to offers from English club Trafford, who are taking part in the 2024 European Championship.

Burnley paid £19 million to sign Trafford from Manchester City just last summer.

This was followed by 28 appearances, all in the Premier League.

However, at the end of the season he lost his place in the team to Arijanet Muric.

Trafford was called up to the England senior team for the first time this season, replacing the injured Sam Johnstone in a friendly against Belgium.

He also made it into Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for Euro 2024.

Trafford won last year’s European Under-21 Championship by saving a penalty in injury time in the final against Spain and scoring the rebound to give England a 1-0 win.

In March, The Pitch Prospect reported that Chelsea were looking to sell Kepa Arrizabalaga following his loan move to Real Madrid, with the Spaniard’s current contract at Stamford Bridge now running for a year.

Blues goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic made 31 appearances in his first season for the club, while former Brighton player Robert Sanchez made 21 appearances and missed a large part of the season through injury.

Newcastle, meanwhile, lost their No. 1 player Nick Pope during the season due to a shoulder injury.

Martin Dubravka stepped in during his absence, while Loris Karius, who played once in the 4-1 defeat to Arsenal in February, was sacked last week.

If Trafford is snapped up by Newcastle or Chelsea, his immediate return to the Premier League would be assured.

His contract with Turf Moor currently has three years left to run.

Meanwhile, Alan Pardew has denied his connection to the Burnley job following Vincent Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich.
