Liverpool have beaten off competition from Chelsea to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in a £60million package.
On Monday, the Reds announced the 20-year-old’s arrival on a long-term contract.

But fans won’t be able to see him at Anfield this season as the France Under-21 international will join on July 1.
“Liverpool have reached an agreement for the transfer of Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais, with the defender set to join the club ahead of the 2026/27 season, subject to a work permit and international approval,” Liverpool said in a statement.
“The Reds have secured a contract for the 20-year-old that will allow him to complete the remainder of the current season in Ligue 1 and move to Anfield on a long-term contract in the summer.”
“Jacquet, who has five caps for France U21, has made 18 appearances for Rennes in his country’s top flight so far this season.
“In total, the central defender has played 31 times for Rennes since his debut in January 2024. He also gained experience in Ligue 1 during a loan spell at Clermont Foot.”
“In 2024, Jacquet helped France reach the final of the European Under-19 Championships, where he was named in the team of the tournament.”
Jacquet will officially move to Merseyside in the summer, where he is seen as Ibrahima Konate’s long-term successor.
Konate is out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether he will extend his five-year stay at the club.
Liverpool were in the market for a new centre-back following the absence of Marc Guehi last summer, and the player moved to Manchester City earlier in the winter window.
Jac, the boy
The Pitch Prospect understands Liverpool have initially spent £55m on signing Jacquet and will have to pay a further £5m in possible add-ons.

He becomes the record seller in Rennes – and thus eclipses the record 52 million pounds them received from Manchester City for winger Jeremy Doku in 2023.
Jacquet underwent a successful medical on Monday and will now travel back to France to finish the season.
Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move to bring Jacquet to Stamford Bridge this window.
But the Blues wanted the youngster to become part of their first team straight away and Rennes insisted he must stay until the summer.
This allowed Liverpool to gain an edge over their Premier League rivals, where Jacquet was able to continue his development in Ligue 1 for the time being.
Rennes are currently in sixth place and are on course to secure their place in Europe next season, while a title in the Coupe de France is still on the cards.
Jacquet has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season and is close to earning his first call-up to Les Bleus’ senior team.
