Manchester United are on the lookout for a new backup goalkeeper as Andre Onana’s current backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is about to move on departuresays one report.
The Turkish number two moved from Fenerbahce to Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 and had few opportunities under Erik ten Hag, only making one appearance in his entire debut season. Bayindir has played just three games in this season’s Carabao Cup but after United scored four goals in a chaotic defeat to Tottenham Hotspur it is out of the competition.
Bayindir is believed to be interested in a move away as the winter transfer window begins in order to become more of a regular in the first team. The 26-year-old had fought his way between the sticks for the Turkish national team before falling behind Mert Günok in the pecking order after sitting on United’s bench.
With Bayindir leaving the club, United are said to be looking for a new number two and number three goalkeeper Sky Sports Germany.
Tom Heaton completes the goalkeeping trio that completes United’s squad, but the 38-year-old’s contract will expire in the summer.
United are reportedly looking not only for replacements but also a new starting goalkeeper after renewed concerns about Andre Onana emerged in recent weeks. The enigmatic – if sometimes unpredictable – Cameroon international has a below-average save percentage this season, but has an impressive record when considering the quality and quantity of shots taken.
However, United have been linked with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and are said to be keeping an eye on Royal Antwerp defender Senne Lammens. While Verbruggen is an established number one in the Premier League, the 22-year-old Lammens could be tipped to be a serious challenger for Onana’s position without immediately dethroning the club’s current goalkeeper.
If United want to become stronger in any position in this crucial winter window, they must sell before they can buy – as head coach Ruben Amorim was keen to point out.
