Manchester United reach agreement with Marseille for Mason Greenwood – and includes huge sell-on clause

Marseille have reached an agreement with Manchester United for a permanent transfer of Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood is training alone, separated from the rest of Man United’s players who have already returned for pre-season, while the club decides on his future.

Last month, The Pitch Prospect reported that Marseille would like to add Greenwood to their squad and had had positive talks with him.

It looks like they have won the race for the striker and will pay £26.7 million, of which £23.3 million is fixed and a further £3.4 million is an add-on.

United is also likely to receive a large share in a future sale.

The 22-year-old had also attracted great interest from Lazio, Napoli and Juventus, as well as clubs in Spain, Germany and Portugal.

A £17 million offer from Lazio for Greenwood was rejected earlier this year.

The Bradford-born player spent last season on loan at Getafe in LaLiga.

We reported that the Spanish club have entered into talks with Man United over another season-long loan, but Greenwood will make a permanent move.

Last August, the Red Devils confirmed that the striker would continue his career outside the club following an internal investigation.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape, assault and making death threats after images and videos appeared online.

He was subsequently suspended from the club and denied all allegations.

In February 2023, all charges were dropped by prosecutors “due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence.”

However, United continued to conduct internal investigations.

He last played for Man United on January 22, 2022 in a 1-0 win against West Ham.
