Michy Batshuayi releases statement as he explains controversial move between rival Turkish clubs

Michy Batshuayi has moved to Galatasaray. This is likely to be one of the most controversial transfers of the summer.

The striker, who famously played for Chelsea and Crystal Palace, has spent the last two seasons with Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

During this time, Batshuayi scored 44 goals in 75 games for the club.

However, since his contract is expiring, the 30-year-old has made the rather risky move to his arch-rival.

Batshuayi, one of football’s greatest characters, announced the move – true to his nickname – with a Batman video in which “Batman” looked over Galatasaray’s stadium and a red and yellow beam appeared.

The now confirmed transfer has caused a lot of discussion in Turkish football; his wife Amely Maria announced that their child had become the target of death threats because of the relationship.

On Instagram, she wrote: “If you don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, don’t point the finger at innocents.

“The real culprits are those who do not take responsibility.”

“Shame on those who threaten my family and wish death on my child because of football, and you dare to talk about family?

“What a disgrace!!! Racism and death threats. God sees you all.”

The striker’s move has sparked great controversy due to the intense rivalry..

But after a loan spell at Besiktas early in his career, Batshuayi has now confirmed he will play for a third Istanbul club next season – crossing enemy lines in one of the most intense rivalries in world football.

He wrote: “A little over three years ago, I spread my wings in this exciting and passionate city of Istanbul.

“Some may have thought that I was arriving here at the end of my career. Thanks to the clubs that trusted me and the support of the fans, I was able to put my goalscoring mantle back on and rediscover the passion and light I needed to succeed once again in a competitive league.”

“I have been able to sign since January and I have been waiting for this trust to be renewed for the coming season. Although I have never doubted the intentions, the actions have not moved me.

“With this in mind, it is now time for me to face a new challenge. I have decided to join Galatasaray and show my connection with the city of Istanbul and the (Turkish) Süper Lig.”

“I understand the importance of my decision and this commitment. I stand tall and proud. I do not forget who I am or where I come from. But I also know where I am going.”

“I am happy to stay in this city that holds a special place in my heart, to wear the colours of the most successful club here and I will give everything to help it continue its tradition of success. Batsman at Rams Park, soon on your screens!”

Batshuayi and Fenebahce narrowly missed out on the Turkish title last season, with the crown going to Galatasaray.

This move could further intensify the already intense rivalry.
