Matthews is one of seven players who were individually recognized by the FWA on two different occasions, but only Henry was granted the privilege of the three titles before Salah’s sensational year.
The 32-year-old striker landed over his teammate from Liverpool Virgil van Dijk, but there was little competition. Salah earned 90% of the votes, which corresponds to “the largest profit margin of this century” FWA.
“There was rarely a most popular winner than MO,” wrote the FWA chairman John Cross. “His overwhelming victory is just a reflection of an incredible season. He continues the record books and his appearances this season were obviously the key to Liverpool’s 20th title.
